Whathappenedlastnight (WHLN) is the number one online guide to entertainment in Manchester. The site was launched in 2001, originally as one of Europe’s first nightlife-photography websites. Its popularity quickly grew, and bar and club listings were added to complement the vibrant images.
Today the site is the successful product of many tweaks and transformations. While Manchester’s nightlife remains at the very essence of WHLN, an aggressive expansion in 2006 saw property listings, restaurant guides and hotel reviews bolster the lifestyle element. These new sections now drive 34 per cent of traffic to the site.
Student culture, DJ interviews, the arts, fashion, ticket booking facilities and serviced accommodation have since added further depth to WHLN, shaping an all-encompassing guide to Manchester life.
True to its origins, WHLN has maintained a strong visual element, with thousands of nightlife photos still uploaded to the site. There is also a strong emphasis on interactive features, with users able to upload content, reviews, photos, and submit ratings. In keeping with the era of social networking, user profiles have been added, allowing members to interact with each other. There is also a popular blog - this received over 10,000 visits during its launch week in 2007.
WHLN has rapidly expanded its commercial element since its launch, forming partnerships with leading providers in various lifestyle sectors. Its online hotel booking facility is operated in partnership with Laterooms. The WHLN online ticketing system, which allows users to book tickets for over 2000 Manchester events, runs in conjunction with Ticketline.
Traffic statistics speak volumes about the success of WHLN. Today the site receives over 365,000 visitors per month. 2.2 million pages are viewed each month and the site boasts 25,000 members. WHLN’s reputation as the most trusted guide to life in the UK’s second city is undoubtedly secure.
