Google now gives alerts for search trends
Google has announced that users can now subscribe to information from search trends. These alerts should help busy professionals to stay on top of the topics they find interesting.
Revealed last Friday on the official Google blog, the new service allows users to have information from Google search trends sent directly to their inbox. Garvi Smith, Software Engineer at the company, explaining who might use Trends said:
“Trends can be really useful if you’re a business owner trying to understand what people are saying about your brand, if you’re a student researching a topic for sociology class, or if you’re simply trying to figure out when ‘doge’ became a thing.”
Insights from trends
The Alerts service takes certain information collected in Trends and sends it out at intervals decided by the user. Google says this method of receiving information will allow users to see when there has been a spike in a particular topic, and these spikes can help subscribers to discover an important event.
For example, if someone has subscribed to a favourite musician, they will see when searches which involve the artist have spiked; from this it is possible to glean information such as a new release or tour announcement.
Alerts will also allow users to subscribe to hot searches. A subscription to hot searches will send an email which contains information about search trends that have risen globally, or in a selected area, over the past 30 days; Google suggests it will help users to stay up to date with current, relevant information.
Natalie Booth, head of search at theEword, said: “This is a fantastic update to the Alerts service. It can reduce the time spent looking up individual search terms as your subscription can prompt you when your favourite terms do something interesting, which is when their frequency shoots up.”
