Apple recalls iPod nano

Apple offers free iPods

A flaw has been discovered in the 1st generation iPod nano, prompting Apple to recall the device six years after launch.

The company admitted in the iPod nano recall notice that in “very rare cases”, the device could “overheat and pose a safety risk”, linking the fault to a battery supplier. The reason the battery fault has gone undiscovered for so long is that the problem worsens with time. However, it could be linked to reports that emerged from Japan in 2010 of the iPod nano overheating and catching fire while charging.

The 1st generation iPod nano was available between September 2005 and December 2006, and features a plastic front rather than metal. If anyone still has this device in their possession, they can now obtain a free replacement by sending the old one to Apple. The new iPod nano (pictured) has a full-colour touch screen, and retails at around £100 – prompting speculation that this fault could cost Apple millions. 60 million iPods were sold between September 2005 and December 2006, but this includes the classic and shuffle models.

Apple’s fault

Although this is only the sixth instance of a product recall or replacement since 2008, Apple has had to deal with several software faults in the past. The iPhone alarm clock has been flummoxed by Daylight Saving Time, while just a few weeks ago Apple issued an iOS5 software update to fix the short battery life.

Richard Frost, managing editor at theEword, said: “If you publicly admit you’ve made a mistake, you’ve got to be seen to be putting it right – and that’s exactly what Apple is doing, regardless of the cost. Of course, a lot of unused or broken devices will undoubtedly resurface, while anyone who got rid of their nano will be kicking themselves now.”
