NHS friendship a good thing, says Facebook

Facebook has spoken out in defence of its data-sharing partnership with the NHS. The social networking website has established a Facebook Connect link to the publicly-funded organisation which allows it to track the pages visitors are accessing.

However, despite claims the NHS has no right to share this information, Facebook believes the partnership is perfectly legitimate.

Speaking to PC Pro, a Facebook representative commented: “With campaigns that the NHS runs, for things like safe sex, people are opting to raise awareness around illnesses – this adds to that, makes them viral and spreads the word.”

Facebook also pointed to its integration of the ‘Like’ button on NHS web pages as an important method in getting the message out regarding certain health issues. “By deciding that I ‘like’ something, that will come up in news feeds and that will drive people to those pages that have a ‘Like’ button,” the spokesperson remarked.

Social media changing the world

One person likely to be of the opinion that social media can change the world for the better is Twitter co-founder Biz Stone. The executive perhaps unsurprisingly claimed that websites like Twitter and Facebook are have a positive effect on society. He even went so far as to decree Twitter to be a “triumph of humanity” rather than a mere technological advancement.

Speaking last month Stone added that he thinks people will eventually move away from computers completely, preferring instead to get online using mobile devices.
