Google warns of risk to internet freedom

Google campaigns for free and open internet

Google is campaigning for internet users to Take Action against an upcoming UN conference on December 3 which they say is a threat to a ‘free and open internet’.

The search engine giant believes the conference is the ‘wrong place’ to discuss the future of the internet, and are concerned that free speech or even access to the web could be cut off altogether. The statement continued to say that services such as Facebook, Twitter and Skype could be affected by the proposals, especially in areas where the internet is fairly new and still developing.

Support for Google campaign from internet users

The reaction to Google taking this stance has been positive from internet users, with influential website Reddit responding in numbers to the campaign. The top two most debated topics on the technology section of the website are both on this topic, with the #freeandopen hashtag on Twitter also receiving backing from the internet public.

This is the latest threat to open information and free speech on the internet, after the much criticised new Russian internet privacy laws were introduced in recent weeks. It is feared the ability the Russian government has to remove websites and information deemed as offensive by the authorities could become more widespread if the UN conference is not properly regulated.

Tom Glass, creative director at theEword commented: “The fact that a company the size of Google feels it is necessary to launch such a campaign shows the strength of feeling relating to internet regulation. With over two billion people using the web on a regular basis, any changes to the internet are clearly going to affect an incredible amount of people.”
