iPad 3 may launch in March

Apple has sent out invitations to a press event on March 7, widely expected to be the launch of the iPad 3.

The press invitations feature the words “We have something you really have to see. And touch” against a background that looks like the touch screen of an iPad or similar large-screened device. Furthermore, March 7 is almost a year to the day since the hotly anticipated launch of the iPad 2, so it is widely believed that next week’s event could see the unveiling of a successor.

In another echo of the iPad 2 launch, the event will take place at Yerba Buena Centre for the Arts in San Francisco, but this time there will be a simultaneous event at King’s Place in London. Of course, the biggest difference is that last year’s event was overseen by the late Steve Jobs; if a new product launches on Wednesday it will be the first for new CEO Tim Cook.

Rumoured iPad 3 features

It has long been thought that a new iPad would feature the high pixel density Retina display, like the iPhone 4S. Another rumour is that a quad-core processor will be used, giving the tablet the power of a MacBook Pro. With 4G networks being developed in the UK and US at the moment, any new Apple device is expected to be compatible with the super fast data connection. It’s also likely that personal assistant app Siri would be included, while Mashable speculated that the word ‘touch’ could refer to haptic feedback technology. Finally, some have analysed the image in the invite to guess what the new product might look like – there is still an obvious border around the screen, but there is no visible Home button.

Richard Frost, managing editor at theEword, said: “Apple is an expert at stirring up anticipation for its product launches, and sending out a cryptic invitation just a week before the event is typically enigmatic. Of course, this could turn out to be another anti-climax like the iPad 2 or iPhone 4S, so last night’s huge surge in Apple share price may have been a little premature.”
