Manchester Evening News launches iPhone application

Regional paper the Manchester Evening News has unveiled a free application for the Apple iPhone. The software allows users to keep abreast of the latest news and sports stories from around the area. It is one of the first local newspapers to offer such a service.

The application, which is available to download from the App Store on the device or via iTunes, allows users to read stories from different sections of the newspaper. Browsers can also email stories to contacts or share articles on Twitter and Facebook.

theEword online marketing manager Mark Baker said that the device ‘was an interesting step for the newspaper.’

He said:

“Print media has been struggling to retain readers over the past few years as more people have been turning to digital and mobile content for their daily intake of news. By launching this application, the Manchester Evening News has displayed an awareness of the changing market.”

Previous online success

The Manchester Evening News has recently been praised for its use of online broadcasting techniques. Earlier this month, the publication was commended for its use of social media while covering the English Defence League protest in Manchester city centre.

One Manchester blogger said of the coverage at the time:

“Out of the major news outlets, The Manchester Evening News provided fantastic online coverage throughout the day. The paper harnessed various social media techniques to offer a comprehensive and involving report of the demonstrations.”
