March static for search engines

Digital intelligence service Experian Hitwise has published the latest UK search engine market share stats for March 2012.

For the four weeks ending 10th March 2012, Google.com and Google.co.uk received a combined total of 90.93 per cent of search volume. This is a very minor improvement on its February search engine market share. In fact all the stats are virtually unchanged since last month: in the same four-week period, Bing dropped to 3.71 per cent of search volume, Yahoo received 2.32 and Ask 1.73 per cent of UK search volume.

Bing plays catch-up

Meanwhile in the US, things are a little more volatile. Google.com dropped over 1.5 per cent to receive 65.09 per cent of US search volume. Yahoo claimed 14.93 and Bing climbed dramatically to 13.41 per cent, closing the gap between the two search engines to just 1.52 per cent.

It has been something of a slow month in search engine news. Google launched a new privacy policy as well as several new or rebranded products. There were also a record 40 tweaks to the search algorithm during February.

For the week ending 10th March, the fastest rising search and social media topics in both the UK and US were dominated by Kony 2012, a campaign to depose a Ugandan warlord.

Here are the UK search engine market share stats for March 2012 in full:

UK Search Engine March 2012 share (%) February 2012 share (%) Change
Google 90.93 90.84 +0.09
Bing 3.71 3.78 -0.07
Yahoo 2.32 2.31 +0.01
Ask 1.73 1.83 -0.10
