Social media backs Barack

America goes to the polls today, with experts predicting an extremely tight race between the Democrat and Republican parties for control of the White House. However, social media statistics seem to give Barack Obama a narrow advantage.

A real time election tracker has been set up by Reel SEO to monitor which candidate has their YouTube adverts shared the most across social media platforms.

This survey has been called the ‘YouTube election, and indicates that President Obama would take a slight victory if YouTube popularity was the deciding factor in the election. With the race predicted to be one of the closest in history, the importance of social media is the greatest it has ever been. The full results of the study are shown below:

While Barack Obama holds the lead on shares over Mitt Romney on every major social networking platform analysed, Romney holds the advantage in terms of total comments. Both candidates have made significant pushes with social media over the campaign which concludes today, with Facebook and Twitter now highly significant for any political contest.

As of the 6th November, Obama has amassed a total of 21,796,895 followers, while Mitt Romney is on 1,701,631. There is also a lead for the current president on Facebook likes, although by a narrower margin.

The changing tactics of elections

The online battle for election has gone beyond social media in 2012, with Barack Obama answering questions on Reddit recently and gaining almost universal support from one of the biggest discussion communities on the internet.

With the study finding that political videos are viewed by 55 per cent of the public eligible to vote, social media could prove to be the key factor in deciding who ends up in the White House for the next four years.

Natalie Booth, online marketing manager at theEword commented: “The majority of polls conducted so far show Barack Obama as having a slight lead, showing that social media is a good reflection of how the voting will go. While an election cannot be won solely online, Obama has an obvious advantage in this area.”
