Christmas cards no longer viable, says blog

Has the traditional Christmas card been superseded by the digital age? A new blog claims that the humble festive gesture is no longer the preferred method when it comes to spreading Christmas cheer, and that social media is responsible.

Writing for Slate, Kate Julian says that while paper post has been gradually declining and card companies are only reporting modest drops year-on-year, the age of the Christmas card is over.

Julian lists Facebook as one of the top reasons why people are turning their backs on cards, claiming that the traditional ‘Christmas catch-up letter and a card’ has been deemed redundant by social networking; your friends and family know what you’ve been doing all-year round.

She says: “Somewhere along the way, between the photos and the [letters], the holiday card stopped being a note from one person to another and started being a mass broadcast.”

Ease-of-use

The ability to simply drag and drop messages and photographs makes Facebook an understandable alternative to sending cards. Indeed, Facebook’s coverage seems to be casting a larger net over a number of paper-based activities.

A recent deal struck with TripAdvisor means that Facebook users can now log onto the site and receive personalised travel advice. Earlier this year, the company also announced plans to integrate its messaging feature with e-mail and SMS services, potentially providing stiff competition to mail providers around the world.
