Twitpic changes its terms and conditions

Twitpic, the online service that enables users to upload photos to the social networking site Twitter, has updated its terms and conditions in a move that has angered users. The new T&Cs suggest that the site can reproduce and use any photograph uploaded to Twitter through the site.

These changes coincide with Twitpic’s recent announcement that it has signed a deal with news agency WENN meaning that it is able to sell on to the media any picture that is posted by a celebrity.

Twitpic will benefit but will users?

Users of Twitpic do retain ownership of their photos but Twicpic has the right to reproduce, distribute and prepare derivative works of content uploaded to the site. Following this revelation many users have boycotted the site. Twitpic’s T&Cs also suggest that even once users deleted content from the site Twitpic can still retain the image.

Twitpic turned its first profit in 2009 from advertising revenues. The deal with WENN could see it reap further revenue and its ability to reproduce royalty free images could help it further.

Twitpic is owned separately from Twitter and these copywriting licences apply only to photos uploaded to Twitter through Twitpic. This development may be one that encourages users to seek other methods for uploading images to Twitter.
