Women dominate social media

Women_dominate_social_media_5211

Over three-quarters of all women online visit a social network site, according to new research. The survey, which was undertaken by comScore, found that 75.8 per cent of all females with internet access visited a social network across May 2010. The statistic compares to the 69.7 per cent of men who visited social sites, such as Facebook and Twitter, during the same period.

The research was revealed by comScore in a new global report into how women use the internet. The paper also discovered that female users also contributed more to their social networks, notching up an average of 5.5 hours on these sites, compared to men’s average time of 4 hours.

Linda Boland Abraham, the comScore chief marketing officer, commented in a press release:

“We have seen that women across the globe share some similar usage patterns online, such as strong engagement with social networking sites, but it’s also important to understand gender differences on a regional, country and local level, where cultural differences are continually shaping online usage and content consumption.”

The report also looked at the differences of women’s online behaviour across continents, finding social networking was most popular in Latin America, with 94.1 of online women visiting socially minded sites during a month. It was also discovered that women enjoyed 25 hours per month on the internet, while spending 20 per cent more time on retail sites than men.
