iPhone tops search report

Mobile marketing executives have been put on alert after it emerged that the iPhone is the most in-demand product this Christmas.

According to digital trend tracker Experian Hitwise, the iPhone accounted for 1.75 per cent of all UK product searches in the consumer electronics category during the week ending December 5th 2009. Moreover, Apple's smartphone accounted for 14 per cent of all mobile web searches over the same period. These findings suggest that the iPhone will continue to be the key growth area for mobile marketing experts in 2010.

Apple will also be pleased to hear that the iPod Touch was the second most popular search term with a 1.29 per cent search share. This was followed by the three biggest games consoles – the Microsoft Xbox 360 (1.24 per cent), the Nintendo Wii (1.18 per cent) and the Sony PlayStation 3 (0.97 per cent).

Boost for consumer electronics websites

It also shows signs of being a bumper quarter for online retailers. UK visits to consumer electronics websites rose 16.5 per cent between October and November. To put it into perspective, this is the largest month-on-month growth in 2009.

Moreover, Robin Goad, research director at Experian Hitwise, has noted that customers seem to be Christmas shopping later than ever. He said: "UK internet visits to consumer electronics retail websites always increase in the run-up to Christmas and this year they peaked during the week ending December 5th – a week closer to Christmas than compared to the last couple of years. UK consumers are clearly holding out more for bargains this year."

Elsewhere, Twitter has just revealed its top trending topics for 2009. In the technology category, Google Wave was the most mentioned term, followed by Snow Leopard, Tweetdeck and Windows 7. Meanwhile, Harry Potter topped the charts in the movie category and American Idol led the field in the TV show category.
