Google stats at lowest ebb

The latest UK search engine market share stats for April 2012 have been published by digital intelligence service Experian Hitwise.

For the four weeks ending 7 April 2012, Google.com and Google.co.uk received a combined total of 90.44 per cent of search volume. This is almost 0.5 per cent down on its March search engine market share; it's the lowest Google has scored in 2012 so far, and is in fact its lowest search engine market share since April 2011. Of course, it's still far outstripping its rivals; Bing received 3.92 per cent, Yahoo 2.51 and Ask 1.76 per cent of search volume in the same four-week period. All these are up compared to March 2012.

Searches for success

There is no clear reason for this drop in Google's search engine market share, although the company may be keen to explore it, as it could equate to hundreds of thousands of searches. The Google Q1 financial results published last week show the company is still doing extremely well, with PPC advertising remaining a major source of revenue.

Meanwhile for the week ending 7 April 2012, Hitwise found that the fastest-growing search terms related almost exclusively to Daily Mail columnist Samantha Brick.
