Online social media guide
Mashable has reported Microsoft’s new search engine, Bing, enjoyed substantial success in its first month of going live.
49.57 million unique hits throughout June make Bing.com the world’s 13th most visited website, outranking the likes of both Twitter and CNN. This surge in users has also been credited to Microsoft’s extensive advertising campaign which also included a viral marketing campaign.
Bing has featured heavily in SEO blogs and news since its launch in June. It is the latest attempt from Microsoft to increase its share of the search market. the
theEword reported that Bing had overtaken Yahoo as the second most popular search engine last month.
Stiff Competition
Many industry commentators have noted that Bing has attracted users through various design features. These include a daily background image, simple layout and attractive font.
Bing has also been praised for its technical features. The Bing image and video searches present single scrolling pages of results, as well as including useful image customisation filters such as the option to search by colour and size selection. Bing also provides a brief website snippet when users hover over a unique website result. This allows searchers to distinguish relevance before clicking through to various websites.
Aodhan Cullen, chief executive of market research company StatCounter said that Bing has experienced a successful launch.
“It remains to be seen if Bing falls away after the initial novelty and promotion, but at first sight, it looks like Microsoft is on to a winner,” he said.
