BlackBerry no longer favourite
A new smartphone survey has indicated that Apple's iPhone is now the top choice for business people, beating long-term leader BlackBerry for the first time.
The research was undertaken by smartphone consultancy company iPass and documented the habits of 2,300 workers.
The results showed that 45 per cent of business users owned an iPhone, while 32 per cent opted for BlackBerry and 21 per cent used an alternative smartphone equipped with Google's Android operating system.
Despite Android-based phones coming third in the survey, their percentage share has doubled since the previous year; while a further 11 per cent of those surveyed stated their intention to buy an Android phone in the following year.
Only 2.3 per cent of people said they would buy a BlackBerry next year - though it is important to note that the survey was partially undertaken during a temporary failure in BlackBerry's service, which is likely to have biased the results.
iPhone attractive to business users
A comparatively huge 18 per cent of workers said they plan to buy an iPhone.
The iPhone 4 is compatible with Microsoft email servers and can be used with Office documents, making it more attractive to business users than ever before.
Other possible factors include the rising incidence of workers using their own smartphones for work instead of relying on models supplied by employers. Mainstream use of the iPhone has grown by 10 per cent since last year.
However, BlackBerry maker Research In Motion (RIM) plans to release the BBX operating system in early 2012, which may see the market shift yet again.
Daniel Nolan, general manager of theEword, said: "BlackBerry's identity as a brand is very business-focused and has been for a long time. However, between RIM's service outage in October and the business-friendly features of the latest iPhone, BlackBerry's position in that market is no longer taken for granted."
