Most anticipated iPhone yet finally announced
Technology giant Apple has released the details of the iPhone 5. The product was unveiled at a press conference in San Francisco, with a number of significant announcements.
There was confirmation of the 4G capabilities of the handset and details of a larger screen. This increased size means an extra row of apps will be visible on the home screen.
Despite the excitement surrounding the potential of 4G and improvements to the camera, some experts felt the decision not to include a NFC (near field communication) chip would prove to be a mistake. The NFC chip allows users to make contactless payments with their smartphone, with this payment method expected to become widespread in the near future.
Apple to challenge Samsung for smartphone dominance
The screen size, while increased, also remains smaller than that of rival devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S3, HTC One X, Nokia Lumia 920 and Sony Xperia T. However, such is the anticipation over the release of any Apple product; the iPhone is still highly likely to be an overwhelming success. The launch date has been set for September 21 with social networks already abuzz with users pre-ordering the device.
The iPhone 5 is the first update since the announcement of the iPhone 4S last year. Some had expected that 4S announcement to be of the iPhone 5, which shows just how long yesterday's announcement has been anticipated.
Daniel Nolan, managing director at theEword gave his thoughts: "Any Apple announcement will always create a buzz, and this is no different. However the rivals to the iPhone have progressed in recent times, and it will be interesting to see if this will tip the scales in Apple's favour in their battle with Samsung."
