Facebook smartphone rumours

Facebook has been working alongside HTC Corp to create a new smartphone, people close to the company have said.

It has been suggested that the social network was due to release a Facebook smartphone later this year, but plans have been pushed back due to HTC's other projects. In a bid to produce its first smartphone, it is thought that Facebook has hired former Apple engineers and designers to work on the project.

Zuckerberg's response

In yesterday's Facebook earnings call, CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg has said that it is unlikely that the company will produce a smartphone in the future. As Facebook is one of the most-used apps across all platforms, Zuckerberg said that it "wouldn't make any sense" to concentrate on hardware.

However, the New York Times has reported that Facebook is continuing to work alongside HTC following their attempt to create a new smartphone codenamed 'Buffy' last year. Previously, Facebook and HTC have worked together to create the Android-based HTC ChaCha, a smartphone that comes with a Facebook button that allows users to share music, images and messages.

In response to these Facebook smartphone rumours, a spokesperson said: "We're working across the entire mobile industry; with operators, hardware manufacturers, OS providers, and application developers."

Natalie Booth, online marketing manager at theEword said: "Facebook's severe dip during its initial public offering was partly due to fears that the company wasn't making enough money through mobile advertising. A Facebook smartphone or mobile platform would give the company a boost in advertising sales - from the $3.5 billion made through advertising last year, none came through mobile ads."
