Google provides mobile audits
Google is offering basic mobile site audits for free in a bid to encourage UK businesses to embrace the mobile web.
According to figures from the search engine giant, the number of Google mobile searches carried out in the UK grew 400 per cent in the last two years. Despite this rapid rise, the company notes that many British businesses still do not have a fully functioning mobile website. So Google has launched a new website, GetMo, to provide tools, information and resources on the subject.
Introducing the GetMoMeter
The most striking feature is the GetMoMeter - a tool revealing what sites looks like on a smartphone. Once users enter a URL, they will be shown a mock-up picture of the first screen that mobile visitors hit, and they will be invited to download a free customised PDF containing recommendations for improving the mobile experience.
Besides the GetMoMeter, the site also contains a number of other features. These include infographics and statistics illustrating why it is important for businesses to build a mobile site, and examples of high-profile brands that have already done it to good effect.
Tom Glass, creative director at theEword, said: "The GetMoMeter offers a simple way for UK businesses to find out what their site looks like on smartphones. Of course, the automated reports that it generates are fairly basic, and no substitute for getting personalised advice from experienced mobile website builders. However, if it introduces more companies to the importance of creating mobile-optimised sites, that has to be a good thing."
