New predictive results system will reduce query time by two to five seconds
Google has unveiled a new search technology which promises to deliver results in real time – and in many cases before users have even finished typing their query.
Google Instant, as the system is known, is said to accurately predict what users are looking for as they enter characters into the search box.
According to a Google blog post, the ‘key technical insight’ which informed the development of Instant was that users were able to read and absorb search results far faster than they could type – making a predictive delivery system the fastest possible way of delivering relevant results.
After Caffeine comes Instant
The unveiling of the new technology took place at a much-hyped press event on Wednesday night and was preceded by several days of innovative Google Doodles, all of which reacted in real time to users’ actions – just as the new Instant search promises to do.
Google moved quickly to reassure webmasters and marketers that the introduction of Instant would not affect search engine rankings – calming fears which had been expressed by some commentators during the announcement.
Speaking about the new technology, Google vice president of search and user experience, Marissa Mayer, said: "In 2000 we thought the idea of being able to search before you typed was so weird we made it our April Fool’s joke. Just 10 years later we're seeing that it's actually possible."
We’ll be looking at the new system in more detail on theEword blog on Thursday. In the meantime you can try Google Instant for yourself by hitting the .com domain (you might need to be logged into a Google Account), or check out some more key stats and a video from Wednesday’s announcement:
