Google News mobile switchover

Many mobile internet users recently became aware of changes to Google’s mobile news site. Users are being automatically redirected to the desktop format of Google News as opposed to accessing the regular mobile site.

The change comes as the leading brand has decided to modify its Google News access, with a spokesman for the company confirming the news on an official thread:

“As you've noticed, we’re switching around the Google News site a bit. Let us know what you think about using the desktop site vs. the old mobile version!”

Many iPhone users have reacted strongly to the alteration, revealing that the desktop website is difficult to read on the iPhone screen. Some individuals are requesting that a link which redirects them to the Google News Mobile site be provided.

Limited UK 3G Use

Meanwhile, UK 3G coverage maps from communications regulator Ofcom have just been released that document the areas in which users are able to gain mobile internet access.

The true extent of areas throughout the UK that don’t have access is surprisingly high. Some users who have purchased mobile phones with the intention of using applications such as Google News have found themselves unable to connect at all due to lack of information from mobile providers with regard to their 3G coverage.

Ofcom states that the UK is by no means lacking in relation to other countries when it comes to overall percentage coverage. In a statement, Ofcom said that improvements to the 3G system were ongoing.

“It [3G coverage] is better than in other comparable countries, but some issues persist. For 3G network coverage there is still a noticeable difference between rural and urban areas, and also between different parts of the UK, with coverage problems a particular issue in the devolved nations”
