Google announces new URL shortener

Google has revealed a dedicated URL shortener, Goo.gl. The search engine announced the new service yesterday via its official blog.

The company stated that Goo.gl would offer three main benefits: stability, security and speed. In a blog post yesterday, the company said:

"People share a lot of links online. This is particularly true as microblogging services such as Twitter have grown in popularity. First, we think people who use the Google Toolbar and FeedBurner will benefit from a shortener that is easily accessible — making it faster and easier to share, post and email links."

Initially, Goo.gl will only be available for the Google Toolbar and Feedburner service. The company has said that it may become available for a wider audience at a later date.

Facebook URL shortener revealed

URL shorteners condense a web address into fewer characters. The limited space in social media sites such as Twitter have seen the need for shortened URLs in order for users to add their own thoughts to the message. There are already a number of different URL shortening services on offer.

The announcement by Google came as bloggers discovered a URL shortener for social media site Facebook, Fb.me. Inside Facebook, an independent technical blog for developers, revealed the discovery of the new service yesterday in a blog. Eric Eldon, a writer at the site, said:

"Facebook recently began automatically shortening URLs that appear in its mobile interface. A URL shortener makes increasing sense as a feature, because the site is trying to be more open and connected to other web sites and Internet-connected devices."
