New Google tool shows sites ‘similar to’ search results.
Google has revealed yet another tool to enhance their visitors' browsing experience. The tool, named 'Similar to' allows users to view a list of sites deemed 'similar' by the search engine to any link they select from a list of search results.
The tool runs along the same lines as Google Images' feature for 'visual similarity' recognition. All the Google user has to do is click the 'Similar' link next to the URL of their chosen website and they will be redirected to the appropriate list. They are then able to view a number of websites all linked to the topic that interests them.
"A better understanding of all the choices the web has to offer"
According to the official Google blog, the ability to find 'similar' links has already been available for some time but hasn't been 'too visible'. Now, however, Google claims that they want to make 'similar to' more readily available to their visitors as a useful tool for exploring the web. "One of the great things about the web is choice," said Doantam Phan, one of Google's Software Engineers. "But how can you find all the sites that are related to the subject that interests you? This week, we launched a search feature that helps you easily find new websites that are similar to the ones with which you’re already familiar."
There has been further good news for Google this week as Adobe sided with the search engine giant over issues with Flash compatibility. The computer software company has gone back on promises to work on making Flash compatible with the both Apple's iPhone and iPad and the change of heart seemingly comes after Apple placed more restrictions on software developers with their recent licence revisions. Adobe will instead concentrate on the Android OS with Adobe's principal product manager Mike Chambers commenting that "the iPhone isn't the only game in town".
