A search engine optimisation expert has published a simple guide to producing content that attracts plenty of links.
Linkbaiting made simple
Melissa Campbell, an SEO consultant at US online marketing agency Distilled, wrote in a blog on SEOMoz that there are four steps to creating good linkbaiting content. The first step is to identify your target niche; this involves reviewing links to competitors in order to determine which people might be inclined to promote content from rival sites. The second step is to identify your angle, which is where you work out what sort of content might attract links based on existing examples and asking target bloggers and websites directly.
The third step is to create your content; Ms Campbell suggested that infographics and photo essays might generate more interest than wordy blocks of text. The final step is to promote your content, which can be done by plugging the content to receptive bloggers and websites that responded earlier, and then distributing to other sites saying that the buzz is building.
Quality content is king
In related news, organic search adviser Rob Ousbey wrote a blog last year about how content can attract links. He argued that the quality of content was the "overwhelming influencer" behind the total number of links generated. He explained: "If you have the time/resource/motivation to do this? and do it better than your competitors? then you'll be able to count this tactic amongst your most valuable".
