Bumper Christmas for iPhone
Mobile marketing experts may be interested to know that this Christmas saw a doubling in the number of iPhones bought.
According to Apple's latest financial results, the company sold 8.7 million iPhones in the fourth quarter of 2009. This represents a 100 per cent hike compared to the same period of 2008.
It also seems that Apple's hugely successful smartphone has been eating into demand for its flagship MP3 player. Sales of the iPod fell eight per cent to 21 million units in the last quarter. On a more positive note, some 3.36 million Macintosh computers were bought, which translates into a 33 per cent year-on-year hike.
Apple by numbers
Overall, Apple posted quarterly revenues of $15.68 billion (£9.72 billion). And it is gearing up to unveil the eagerly anticipated iTablet later this week and the iPhone 4G in April.
Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple, hailed the results. "If you annualise our quarterly revenue, it's surprising that Apple is now a $50+ billion company," he said. "The new products we are planning to release this year are very strong, starting this week with a major new product that we're really excited about."
One of the most popular characteristics of the iPhone is the huge choice of third-party apps. There are more than 100,000 apps in the official App Store including offerings from the likes of the Manchester Evening News, Shazam and Tweetdeck. Recently, the App Store notched up its three billionth download since launching less than 18 months ago.
