Bing starts 2014 on the up
The January 2014 UK search engine market share stats have been revealed by visitor counter service StatCounter Global Stats.
The results show that in January 2014, Google.com and Google.co.uk received a combined total UK search volume of 88.71 per cent. This is very slightly down by 0.03 per cent compared to its December search engine market share - the search giant has been under the 90 per cent mark since May 2013.
Bing meanwhile saw an increase to 6.26 per cent, its highest volume since September 2013 and continuing the growth it has seen over the last three months. Yahoo also grew by 0.01 per cent to 3.3 per cent of total volume, while the category made up by all other search engines declined further to 1.73 per cent. The UK's top search engines in this group include Ask Jeeves, AOL, Snap.do, and AVG Search.
StatCounter's data for the US in January 2014 puts the three front runners in the same order; with Google at 81.14 per cent, Bing at 11.51 and Yahoo on 5.13.
2014 for Google
Google therefore remains the market leader in search, and has continued to make improvements to its search offering in recent months. However, more noticeable in January has been its spending splurge in areas unrelated to search; buying home technology company Nest in mid January for $3.2bn (£1.96bn), and artificial intelligence start-up Deep Mind for $400m last week. Fourth quarter 2013 earnings were reported at $3.38bn, up 17 per cent year on year.
January's top search trends
According to Google Trends, TV hits Celebrity Big Brother and Sherlock dominated the fastest-rising search terms. The January holiday-booking peak was also apparent, with Thomas Cook, Thomson, Easyjet, Tripadvisor and Premier Inn all in the top ten fastest rising.
