Double the improvement for search engines

Microsoft and Yahoo are stepping up their services in a renewed effort to compete with search giant Google.

A new version of Microsoft’s internet search engine is to be showcased for the first time in public next week, according to reports.

Meanwhile, Yahoo recently set out plans to improve its search service also; claiming it will answer more search queries with specific information such as addresses, photos, and other real-world information rather than links to Web pages.

The search company is using computer analysis and sourcing from feeds of data it gets from partners in its new search service.

Microsoft’s plans

Industry insiders say Microsoft is planning to demonstrate its refurbished search engine, which has a code name of Kumo, at technology conference D: All Things Digital next week.

The software giant’s new search platform is designed to be more effective in organising search by minimising the amount of time spent looking for information on the web.

The length of time taken to search will be cut down through the service, which has been in private testing for months, by grouping the results. For example, a search for a particular model of car will be placed in categories such as parts, used car listings, online discussion forums and videos featuring the vehicle.

In April, research firm comScore Inc. reported that Microsoft had 8.2 per cent of the global search market, Yahoo had 20.4 per cent and Google had 64.2 per cent.
