Microsoft awarded best UK brand prize
Microsoft has been named as the number one consumer brand in the United Kingdom. The technology giant was awarded the prize in the 12th annual top 500
Superbrands survey.
The list of companies was compiled by an expert panel as well as a public vote by UK consumers. Over 1,400 companies were judged and ranked based on their quality, reliability and distinction.
Other technology businesses included in the list included Google and Apple. Google slipped from first place in 2008 to third in 2009. Last year, Microsoft lost out on first position to the search engine company. It is the first year Apple has featured in the top ten list of brands.
”Innovation and high-value solutions”
"Actually making the top 500 itself is an achievement - the competition amongst brands for consumer attention and share of wallet is intense and growing fiercer," said Stephen Cheliotis, chief executive for the Centre for Brand Analysis.
Text on the Superbrands website explained the decision:
“Microsoft believes that delivering breakthrough innovation and high-value solutions through its integrated platform is the key to meeting customer needs and to its future growth. The company continues its long term commitment to innovation and in 2008 invested US$8.2 billion in research and development.
It continued:
“The year also saw some key product launches, including Windows Server 2008 and Visual Studio 2008, as well as the release of new online tools including Silverlight, a web browser plug-in that enables rich internet applications.”
