Bing to allow 'Visual Search'

Bing, the search engine from Microsoft, has revealed a new search service for users. The feature, called 'Visual Search', sees browsers view search results as images, rather than traditional text listings.

The beta version of Visual Search was revealed at San Francisco conference TechCrunch 50 this week. The service is initially set to concentrate on four main subjects: travel, shopping, health and leisure and Microsoft claim the feature will allow users to find relevant results much faster.

Yusuf Mehdi, Microsoft's senior vice president of online services, said the service would change the way people see online search.

"There will be a more graphic way people will search, and it will pivot how people search," he said.

The launch was also announced on the official Microsoft Bing blog:

"How many times have you seen a movie trailer and forgotten the name of it the next day? You go online to search for it but you can’t seem to find the movie with “what’s-his-name” in it anywhere but you can picture the actor in your head."

The blog goes on to highlight how the service displays results for film and shopping queries.

Meanwhile, it has been revealed that Bing has gained a 10 per cent share of the US search market.

Research from marketing group Nielsen suggests the search engine captured 10.7 per cent of all internet queries in August. Based on information collected in July, Bing has seen its market share grown by nine per cent.
