Social Networking Most Popular

Research firm CCS Insight has published an investigation into social networking use on mobile phones. The report found that a third of all young adults access social networking sites using their mobile phones.

The research, which explored the mobile usage of 16 to 35 year olds, confirmed that social networking sites take up the majority of sites visited on mobile internet.

Social media portals, such as Facebook, Bebo, MySpace and Twitter, have become increasingly popular in recent years. The report concludes that their popularity over mobile internet is a result of more young people owning handsets with internet access.

CCS Insight analyst Paulo Pescatore said:

"Forget music and video downloads, social networking is where it's at and Facebook is king of the hill.”

Willing to Pay

The report said that 24 to 36-year-olds were most likely to pay for mobile phone content, including mobile internet access. This includes updating their Twitter and Facebook profiles via text message.

However, Paulo Pescatore feels operators should remain cautious not to overcharge.

“The challenge operators face is balancing demand for these services with the bandwidth they consume. Networks are going to think carefully about how they charge for mobile internet access,” he added.

CCS Insight predicts that 44% of mobile phone users will access online data via their handsets by the end of 2009.
