Yahoo unveils new look site
Yahoo has unveiled brand new changes to its home page in an effort to boost its popularity.
The site, which despite being one of the net’s most reputable, has played second fiddle in recent years to services like Google, Facebook and Twitter. The revamped home page is an effort to improve its worldwide recognition.
The new design will act as a gateway to the entire web, and many industry commentators have speculated this is move will put Yahoo on the map as a central internet browsing portal.
The most significant change to the home page is ithe additional widgits tab on the left hand side. Pre-installed with around 60 links, it is customisable for users. These widgets can log and store previously visited websites.
Associate Editor of social media blog Mashable.com, Ben Parr, said "The new homepage is designed to make Yahoo the web's number one destination portal by once again giving people one place to access everything."
XoopIt on Yahoo Mail
The brand new format goes hand in hand with the union of Yahoo and
XoopIt this week. Yahoo are rumoured to have paid around $20 million for the photo organisation tool, although figures are unconfirmed.
XoopIt will run in Yahoo Mail accounts. Acting as a media gatherer, it collates videos and images, even those misplaced in email over time, into a large scrapbook.
XoopIt then allows users to create and manage their own albums, sharing them with email contacts if they choose to.
Bryan Lamkin wrote on the Yahoo official corporate blog, “While social networks and community sites are great for sharing photos with everyone you know, we realize it’s not for everyone or every occasion. For many, email is still best for sharing photos among a more select group of friends or family. And now we’re making it all that much easier for you.”
