Bing when you're winning
The October 2012 UK search engine market share data has been published by visitor counter service StatCounter Global Stats.
In October 2012 so far, Google.com and Google.co.uk have received a combined total of 91.1 per cent of UK search volume. This is down by 0.35 per cent compared to its September 2012 search engine market share, and the stability of the preceding months. Meanwhile, Bing is also up by 0.35 to 4.59 per cent of search volume, Yahoo is steady at 2.3 per cent, as is Ask at 0.52.
Google's search volume of 91.1 per cent is in fact the lowest it has been in months, after summer highs of over 92 per cent. In contrast, Bing's search engine market share climbed dramatically in October; possible contributing factors could be the Bing It On marketing campaign in September, or even the launch of Windows 8 last week.
Earlier this year, Microsoft revealed that the new operating system will include deep Bing integration, using a search app to provide "fast and fluid" results direct "from anywhere in the modern Windows experience". This unique operating system integration allows Microsoft to bypass the browser, which is fortunate considering Google Chrome's unstoppable progress. However, it may be some time before adoption of Windows 8 is sufficient to impact heavily on search engine market share.
