Online retailers prepare for 'Black Friday'

Online retailers in the United States are preparing themselves for the busiest 'Black Friday' on record.

Black Friday, the first Friday after Thanksgiving in the US, is traditionally the start of the Christmas sales period. Industry analysts are predicting that internet retailers will see their busiest period to date, with many businesses offering online discounts and sales in order to tempt customers.

Over the past seven days, Google searches for the term 'Black Friday' have steadily increased, peaking at a score of 100 on Wednesday 25th November – the latest record available.

Meanwhile, many companies are using social media to highlight deals and offers available to consumers. PC manufacturer Dell, famed for its innovative use of social media, is using Twitter to highlight Black Friday deals.

Indeed, Twitter conversations including the phrase 'Black Friday' have seen the subject enter the 'Trending Topics' list (the collection of the most frequently used words). Over the last 24 hours, over 2 per cent of updates on the service have used the words 'Black Friday' as a number of users share deals and offers with each other.

Zdenka Turecek of Search Engine Journal said:

"Black Friday just isn’t what it used to be. Thanks to the internet and online Black Friday ads, you can map out a plan for the biggest shopping day of the year at the click of a mouse from the comfort of your home."

It is predicted that consumer online spending will continue through to 'Cyber Monday', where it is thought internet sales will see their strongest sales date of the year.
