Designers alerted to Opera 10 compression tool
A reworked browser promises to give the best ever performance on limited connections, suggesting to
designers that it could become the portal of choice for on-the-move business consumers with weak wi-fi connections.
Opera 10, which is available on Windows, Macs and Linux computers, is a free browser boasting an innovative new technology called Opera Turbo.
This tool automatically detects when network speeds have dropped to a level where it could improve performance, then begins instantly compressing pages.
It means less data needs to be transferred in order to view pages, which translates into faster web browsing for users with limited connections.
Opera Turbo offers eight times faster browsing
The Norwegian company’s development team claims Opera Turbo can provide eight times faster web surfing than other browsers under restricted-speed conditions.
“At Opera, we have always worked hard to innovate new ways to improve everyone’s browsing experience,” said Jon von Tetzchner, CEO of
Opera.
“Opera Turbo is our newest innovation and one we think everyone should try because we all will face a slow connection at some point. Now there is a solution and it is absolutely free.”
In addition to the compression technology, Opera 10 also boasts a streamlined new interface and customisable tabbing system.
And the browser apparently loads pages 40 per cent faster in standard mode than Opera 9.6.
In the past, Opera has often been overlooked by the design community because of the dominance of its two main rivals.
According to the latest figures, Internet Explorer boasts two-thirds of global web users ahead of Mozilla Firefox’s one fifth market share.
