A Christmas filled with Android and iOS devices
There were a record number of iOS and Android activations on Christmas Day 2011 as well as a high level of apps downloaded.
A report undertaken by Flurry Analytics has found that there was a significant increase in the number of Android and iOS activations on 25 December 2011. The research company said: "On Christmas Day, activations jumped to more than 6.8 million, a 353 per cent increase over the baseline." This overtakes the record-breaking figure from Christmas Day 2010, where there were 2.8 million activations.
Andy Rubin, senior vice president of mobile at Google, took to Twitter to confirm: "There were 3.7M Android devices activated on 12/24 and 12/25." As this figure is split across two days - the 24th and 25th of December 2011 - it suggests that Apple held the predominant share of the 6.8 million Christmas Day activations. The iOS platform is used on iPads, iPod touches and iPhones, indicating that the majority of people received Apple devices for Christmas.
A record number of apps
Flurry Analytics also found that the number of apps downloaded on Christmas Day was more than double that of a typical day. There was a significant peak in the early evening, the traditional downtime on the 25 December.
Adrian Mursec, senior developer at theEword, stated: "An increasingly large number of people have smartphones and mobile devices, from which they can download apps. It is becoming imperative for businesses to consider Android and iOS when building websites as it allows companies to advertise and increase their brand awareness.
