Spotify founder reveals importance of social media

Daniel Ek, co-founder of popular music programme Spotify, has stated that social media plays an important role in the future success of the software.

Speaking at the New Music Seminar in Los Angeles, Ek stressed that the service relies on social networking sites in order to increase its number of subscribers. He revealed that the largest proportion of traffic comes from users recommending new music on Twitter and Facebook.

"Twitter is one of Spotify's biggest traffic sources," Ek said at the conference.

He went on to state the company was planning to launch social media integration - similar to Twitter - later in 2010.

"The only thing I can go into is we will likely adopt something similar [to Twitter] where you can follow or become a fan an artist," he said.

"What that means initially is that everything on Spotify will be visible to that user in a way they can discover something new by Madonna or another artist they enjoy. And that's likely something we're going to adapt."

The future of Spotify

Spotify, the Swedish application, was launched in 2007. The service, which is subsidised through sporadic advertising, provides users with the opportunity to listen to a database of over eight million tracks for free. Account holders can pay to remove advertising breaks between songs.

Ek claims the software has more than 250,000 subscribers across seven different countries, including the United Kingdom. He also stated that the number of new accounts grows by 2,000 users per day.

He revealed the software is set for launch in the United States during 2010.
