Testing will soon begin on Bing-powered Yahoo results, it has been revealed. A recent presentation by Yahoo and Microsoft, which displayed the proposed timeline for the integration of the two companies, suggested trials of the Bing search algorithm in Yahoo search results would begin at the end of June.
The news was revealed in a joint presentation between the two companies outlining a timeline for the plans set out between the firms in 2009. This arrangement, struck in July, saw the organisations join forces in an attempt to tackle Google's stranglehold on the American and European search market. The arrangement stated that Microsoft would use the Bing engine to power organic and paid search. According to the announcement, the paid search transition will begin mid-July.
Speaking to Marketing Pilgrim, a Yahoo spokesperson said:
"Our goal is to transition algorithmic and paid search in the U.S and Canada in 2010 and we will soon start a series of external bucket tests.
However, our focus is on providing advertisers with a quality transition experience while protecting the all important holiday season. If we don’t believe we can do both in that timeframe, we will wait until 2011."
At the time of the deal, the two companies said that the agreement would revolutionise the search engine market.
"Providing a viable alternative to advertisers, this deal will combine Yahoo! and Microsoft search marketplaces so that advertisers no longer have to rely on one company that dominates more than 70 percent of all search. With the addition of Yahoo!’s search volume, Microsoft will achieve the size and scale required to unleash competition and innovation in the market, for consumers as well as advertisers."
