Twitter targets mobile users

Twitter has launched a new mobile website, which could potentially encourage more smartphone users to access the micro-blogger on the move.

The portal, which can be accessed by pointing mobile browsers at http://mobile.twitter.com, has just entered the preview stage. Twitter is now inviting feedback from users ahead of its full launch at an unspecified later date. The test version has been optimised for phones with WebKit browsers such as iPhones, Android phones and the Nokia S60 – although it also works on other devices like Blackberries.

Currently, Twitter users are able to manage their accounts via m.twitter.com. Once the compatibility issues have been ironed out, however, Twitter intends to automatically switch over all users from 'm' to the new site.

Mobile users promised Twitter experience

The Twitter mobile team has built the portal to give phone users a more faithful approximation of the service. Leland Rechis, mobile user experience designer at Twitter, explained: "Lots of people access Twitter on their phones via our good ol' mobile website and trusty 'm' has been delivering tweets faithfully. However, 'm' doesn't fully feel like Twitter and could probably do a bit more things for you (sic)."

Several web 2.0 portals have been setting out their mobile strategies recently. Last month, for example, Spotify launched a new app that made the online music service compatible with smartphones on the Symbian operating system – more than 50 per cent of the smartphone market. And a month earlier, it was revealed that social news portal Digg was busy developing an app for the iPhone.
