Twitter was intended for mobile use
Micro-blogging facility Twitter has revealed that it now has 10 million active users in the UK - 80 per cent of whom access it using their mobile phones.
This is far greater than global mobile use of the service, which stands at around 55 per cent.
"We have seen growth in the number of people signing up from a mobile," said a Twitter UK spokesperson, quoted in The Guardian, who also pointed out that one of Twitter's original aims was to be used via SMS (short messaging service) - hence its limit of 140 characters.
Twitter was first launched in 2006 and has grown into one of Britain's most popular social networks. The UK is only superseded in its overall Twitter use by the US, Brazil and Japan.
High rate of user engagement
"This is great news for mobile marketers in the UK," said Daniel Nolan, managing director at theEword. "Not only does Twitter now have 10 million users - more than 15 per cent of the entire country - but eight out of every 10 are using their mobile to access it, giving brands plenty of opportunity to engage them."
Twitter also has a high rate of user participation, when compared with other social facilities. YouTube, for example, has around 800 million users worldwide, but only 1 per cent have ever posted a video - meaning the rest are mere spectators. Of Twitter's 140 million users, on the other hand, 60 per cent have contributed.
The milestone of 10 million UK users has been reached ahead of the first anniversary of Twitter's London office, which opened on 1 June 2011. Now staffed by more than 30 people, the UK arm of the company hopes to develop a closer relationship with the government.
Twitter UK general manager Tony Wang confirmed that the company is about to hire a public policy manager, with a brief to work with the government, various ministries, members of parliament and law enforcement bodies.
