Twitter surpasses 10 billion updates

The total number of updates on social media giant Twitter has surpassed 10 billion. The statistic was revealed yesterday, although the landmark tweet could not be disclosed as it was posted from a protected account.

Given the site's current growth, it is predicted Twitter will surpass 50 billion tweets sometime in 2010.

Reporting in techradar.com, Marc Chacksfield said the statistic was impressive.

"This is something of a landmark for the micro-blogging site and one which shows just how popular Twitter has become – especially if you consider that the 1 billionth tweet was only sent in November 2008," he said.

"We're hoping it [the tweet] was something witty, irreverent and nuanced. But we're expecting it's about what that person had for dinner," he added.

Twitter recently revealed that around 600 tweets were posted every second on the site, with over 50 million being created over a 24 hour period.

Survey reveals business use on Twitter

The news that the 10 billionth tweet had been posted coincided with research from Virgin Media Business regarding the methods used by the FTSE 100 businesses on Twitter.

The survey found that, while 57 of FTSE 100 companies had a presence on Twitter, over 72 per cent of these had not used their account to respond to customer queries and comments.

Phil Stewart, director of customer service at Virgin Media Business said:

"Clearly this presents an excellent opportunity for companies to engage with customers, but many are missing out. Creating a Twitter account and leaving it dormant or not responding to tweets by your customers is no better than opening a contact centre and not picking up the phone."
