New features revealed for Twitter

Social networking giant Twitter has unveiled a range of new features. The expanding networking site revealed its users can now share their location on updates posted directly from the website. Earlier in the week, the site announced it would be launching a dedicated URL shortener.

The new location feature allows users to post their current position – also known as 'geotagging' – on a tweet composed from a computer. Previously, the geotagging option was only available in third-party Twitter applications such as Tweetdeck.

The new feature, which users must activate in order to begin sharing their location, is being introduced over the coming days. The new system is implemented on the account settings tab of the page. The text on the site reads:

"Ever had something you wanted to share that would be better with a location? By turning on this feature, you can include location information like neighbourhood, town, or exact point when you tweet."

New features introduced

Earlier in the week, Twitter announced it would be introducing a dedicated URL shortener. The service was revealed on the site's official blog by Del Harvey, the director of Twitter's trust and safety team.

"Today, we’re launching a new service to protect users that strikes a major blow against phishing and other deceitful attacks. By routing all links submitted to Twitter through this new service, we can detect, intercept, and prevent the spread of bad links," she said.

The new feature comes after a wave of high-profile Twitter phising scams.
