Microsoft has given marketers a sneak peek of the advertising opportunities on Windows 8.
In a post on the Microsoft Advertising blog, the company published screenshots showing how ads will be integrated into the operating system, which is expected to be released to the general public later this year. Microsoft has been working with six creative agencies - AKQA, Razorfish, Big Spaceship, UM, Y&R and Team Detroit - in recent months to improve the ad experience.
Adidas shows how it's done
The screenshots show an ad for Adidas in the Seattle Sounders FC app for Windows 8. In the first picture, the ad takes up approximately a third of the page space on the right-hand side of the articles section. In the second screenshot (pictured in part), triggered when users click on the ad, there is a full-size landing page that provides more information about the product. And in the third visual, showing a panoramic view of the entire app, the ad displays on the extreme right-hand side.
Jenn Creegan, general manager display advertising experiences at Microsoft Advertising, commented: "We are excited about the early concepts and possibilities of advertising experiences in Windows 8 apps, and in the coming months we'll have more to share as we start to outline specifics around offerings for marketers across the world."
This release of the Windows 8 advertising preview comes just days after Microsoft unveiled its first ever home computers. The Windows Surface is a tablet that will come in two versions at launch; one runs Windows 8 Pro and the other uses Windows RT - a version of Windows 8 designed specifically for tablets.
Natalie Booth, assistant marketing manager at theEword, added: "Microsoft is clearly putting a lot of effort into making Windows 8 a success. The advertising opportunities that they have been showcasing look great, so it'll be fascinating to see if they live up to the early promise."
