Google down again
The latest UK search engine market share stats for February 2014 have been published by visitor counter service StatCounter Global Stats.
The results show that in February 2014, Google.com and Google.co.uk received a combined total UK search volume of 88.6 per cent; that’s another 0.11 per cent down on its search engine market share in January. Google has now had under 90 per cent of UK volume for nine consecutive months, and year-on-year is down by 0.78 per cent.
Conversely, Bing enjoyed an increase to 6.38 per cent, continuing its upward trajectory by 0.12 per cent. Yahoo also grew to 3.44 per cent of total volume, while the category made up of all other search engines declined to 1.58 per cent. Within this category, some of the top search engines include Ask Jeeves, AVG Search and AOL.
Both the major search engines have been ramping up search quality this month. Google announced it had penalised more spam link networks in Europe; while Bing clamped down on poor spelling and grammar, revealing errors would hurt rankings. Meanwhile, Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer has been talking about contextual search and its importance in Yahoo’s future strategy.
Search trends in February
According to Google Trends, the UK’s fastest rising search term in February 2014 was Philip Seymour Hoffman, following the actor’s tragic death. The Sochi Winter Olympics and tube strike also got a look-in, while two apps made the top ten – Talking Angela, after a hoax rumour circulated that it was a front for a paedophile ring, and Flappy Bird, which received 50 million downloads before being discontinued.
