Google launches new news service
Google has created for news publishers a new service which enables webmasters to make changes to the search engine’s record of their website.
Called Google News Publisher Center, the new service has just been released in the US. But the company says it plans to soon introduce the service into other countries and with additional features.
Google says the Publisher Center has been introduced to help it discover new news articles and thus to help all publishers get greater readership for the content which they post on their websites. On its blog, Google said:
“In the past, when you made changes to the structure of your site, we might not have discovered your new content.
“To prevent this from happening, we are letting you make changes to our record of your news site.”
What’s in the box?
Google said that the new service will allow for three types of specific changes: updates to news site details, updates to section URLs, and labels for news sections.
An ‘update to news site details’ includes changing the website name, and adding to the publication any source labels. Google suggests three examples: blog, satire, or opinion.
An ‘update to the section URLs’ means the user may let Google instantly know when they have added a new section for news to the website.
And ‘labelling the sections’ means that users may add specific topic labels to a section, such as technology or politics, which can help the search engine to sort the news.
In concluding remarks on its blog, Google said: “Ultimately, our goal is to make this a platform where news publishers and Google News can work together to provide readers with the best, most diverse news on the web.”
Adrian Mursec, head of development at theEword said: “As Google continues to update its old search algorithms, it makes sense that they go on to add services like this which demonstrate that Google supports well made, great new content.”
