eBay loses organic rankings
eBay has suffered from a drop in organic search rankings following the Google Panda 4.0 roll-out and Payday Loan 2.0 update.
Dr. Peter Meyers at Moz has found that the main eBay subdomain has plunged from its list of ‘Big 10’ domains. It has also been noted that 75 per cent of the terms it used to rank for on page one have now been lost.
Last year, eBay turned its focus from paid search, claiming that “brand-keyword ads have no short-term beneﬁts, and that returns from all other keywords are a fraction of conventional estimates.” Instead it chose to concentrate on organic search rather than Adwords.
Why was eBay affected by Google Panda 4.0?
Following the decision to optimise the site for organic search, eBay’s chosen strategy may be the reason it was hit by Google Panda 4.0.
It has been discovered that the site contains a number of doorway pages – also known as bridge pages – which are typically optimised for a specific keyword or phrase with the purpose of improving traffic to a site. Internal linking has also been aggressively used, while product pages across eBay tend to contain minimal content.
Other sites that appear to have been affected by the Google Panda 4.0 roll-out include yellowpages.com, biography.com and ask.com which has lost a large amount of traffic to its questions section.
Rachel Hand, head of content at theEword, has said: “The Google Panda 4.0 update was designed to knock low quality content out of search results. If you have been hit by a big decrease in rankings and traffic, it would be worth looking at the content across your site and improving what is currently there.”
