Google launches browser size application
Google Labs has released Google Browser Size, a new tool which allows designers to analyse the percentage of a website initially seen by browsers.
Taking into account the average browser window size of internet users, the tool divides a website into various coloured sections. This displays the portion of a page visitors can initially view when the page loads. The announcement from Google said the tool would allow webmasters to effectively highlight the vital sections of their site:
“Google Browser Size is a visualization of browser window sizes for people who visit Google. This is useful for ensuring that important parts of a page’s user interface are visible by a wide audience”.

The tool, available through Google Labs, allows users to submit a URL for testing. The application then divides a page into various coloured sections for analytics.
Tom Glass, theEword creative director, said that the tool would prove invaluable for webmasters. He commented:
“This is a great little application to see how well you are using available real-estate. Using tools like the browser resize makes you aware of where important features and call-to-action buttons should be placed. This helps build a greater understanding of the user and optimise a website for maximum conversions.”
An entry on the Google Code blog revealed that the tool was produced through the 20 per cent Google Time scheme, an initiative which allows employees to spend one fifth of their working day on a personal project. Google Mail and Google Maps were both created through this project.
