A look at the new YouTube homepage
The new YouTube redesign gives users a more personalised experience through the introduction of a subscription feed as well as Google+ and Facebook integration.
YouTube has announced it biggest ever design overhaul, with changes being made to the homepage and channels. The aim is to make a user’s experience on the site more personal, as they have greater access to videos they would want to watch based on their viewing history, subscriptions and likes.
There is a default subscriptions feed which shows all of the latest uploads a user has signed up to. The algorithmically-determined feed also shows a selection of videos liked and commented on by a user’s YouTube subscriptions, based on their viewing history. This Youtube change will allow people to gain easier access to videos they may enjoy.
YouTube goes social
The new YouTube homepage places great emphasis on Google+ and Facebook, with both icons having priority on the navigation bar. The Official YouTube Blog stated: “The YouTube homepage is your gateway to a vast entertainment universe. […] On the left side of the homepage you can create your own, personal, customizable YouTube Channel line-up.” The ability to view feeds of videos uploaded, commented on or liked by friends with similar interests will enable users to have a richer and more individual selection of videos at their fingertips.
Adrian Mursec, senior developer at theEword, said: “The new YouTube homepage now reflects that of a social networking site, with feeds that display the activities of friends. This redesign appears to be another example of Google creating a social layer on all of its products.”
