How Larry Page is improving Google

Google thinks big

Larry Page has recently looked at how Google is pushing the boundaries of technology and suggested that rivalries between companies are dampening innovation.

In a recent interview with Wired Magazine, the Google CEO highlighted the importance of dedicating an entire department to moon shot projects. He suggested that such inventions as the self driving car – which is now being introduced into some American states – are a necessity.

Page said: “I feel like there are all these opportunities in the world to use technology to make people’s lives better. At Google we’re attacking maybe 0.1 percent of that space. And all the tech companies combined are only at like 1 percent.”

Youtube, Gmail, Chrome and Android can all be seen as examples of Google deviating away from its search engine to explore the “99 percent virgin territory” and carrying out breakthrough, non-incremental projects.

Rivalry and innovation

The Google CEO also proprosed that the current rivalry between technology companies is having a dampening effect on technological innovation. He suggested that organisations should instead have the ambition to move into different areas and tackle difficult projects in order for innovative products and services to be developed.

During this time, Page also showed his frustration at technology companies such as Apple and Facebook who he believes simply tweak their original business idea in an attempt to trounce rivals.
