One billion monthly users for YouTube
YouTube reaches billion monthly users
One billion people now use YouTube every month, an official announcement from the video sharing service has confirmed.
A YouTube blog post provided some further insight into just how significant the levels of YouTube use were, with a number of eye-opening statistics. As well as having an audience that would fill the famous Madison Square Garden arena 200,000 times, YouTube can also boast the following:
- A monthly audience ten times the size of the total number of people who watched the Superbowl.
- If YouTube was a country, it would have the third largest population on Earth.
- Almost 50 per cent of the entire global population with internet access uses YouTube.
Increased subscription the cause?
A redesign of the website in December 2012 targeted increased numbers of YouTube subscriptions, as well as encouraging users to create an account rather than viewing videos as a guest.
Google has recently shed new light on YouTube’s popularity, as the search engine giant updated its Google Trends service with information on YouTube videos. This data goes back as far as 2008, creating a fascinating resource as to the growth of YouTube, as well as which videos have proved to be the most popular over the years.
Tom Glass, creative director at theEword commented: “This announcement confirms the status of YouTube as having some of the highest traffic anywhere on the internet. Facebook recently stated that the social network service has 27 million Facebook users in Britain, and it is clear that YouTube enjoys similar popularity. The next question for the video sharing service is how it will look to progress further still, maintaining its status as the market leader”
