Reddit secret Santa – 3D Queen’s Speech – Wallace and Gromit’s G+ hangout
Reddit users break secret Santa world record
Generous Reddit users have broken the record for the biggest ever Secret Santa, with members of the highly popular website exchanging gifts worth over $2 million.
Some of the more extravagant gifts included a holiday to the Caribbean, a new top of the range guitar, a brand new laptop and complete collections of the recipients favourite comic book series. Over 58,000 members of the website have taken part so far, making the average spend for Reddit Secret Santa roughly $34 (£21).
More commonly found gifts were DVD's, console games, clothing and handmade items by users with a particular talent. Tickets to events, charity donations and care packages of food for students were also among the items delivered by mystery internet strangers. The vast majority of gifts have been extremely well received, with countless pages of messages thanking their Secret Santa for the item delivered to them.
With gifts continuing to be delivered up until the big day itself, the new world record looks set to grow and grow. With the popularity of Reddit recently displayed by Barack Obama answering questions on the website during his election campaign, this is yet another example of just how popular the internet community has become.
3D broadcast for Queen's speech
The Christmas tradition of watching the Queen's speech with the family has a new twist for 2012, with Her Majesty set to address the nation in 3D.
With 3D televisions becoming more popular and an increasing amount of films being shown in the format, the conversion of this iconic television event to 3D was the next step towards wider popularity for this style of television.
The 3D broadcast is also in honour of the momentous occasion of the Queen's jubilee, celebrated earlier this year. A spokesperson for the palace said "The Queen absolutely agreed straight away, there was no need for convincing at all, she was absolutely ready to embrace something new this year."
Viewers will also be able to enjoy the broadcast in regular and HD definitions for those who do not yet have a 3D television. The themes in the speech for 2012 have not yet been revealed, however she is expected to comment on the recent announcement that Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge are expecting their first child.
Wallace and Gromit in festive Google+ hangout
Iconic plasticine double act Wallace and Gromit are the stars of a Christmas advertising campaign from Google+.
The cheese-loving British pair are household names thanks to films such as A Grand Day Out, The Wrong Trousers, A Close Shave and The Curse of the Were-Rabbit. They are joined by other famous creations from the Oscar-winning Aardman Studios in a hangout, as they all open their Christmas gifts together.
Wallace and Gromit's friend Shaun the Sheep features, as does Ginger from the popular Chicken Run movie and animals from the critically-acclaimed Creature Comforts series, marking the first time all the characters have appeared together in one project.
Voiced by veteran actor Peter Sallis, Wallace leads the hangout as the characters are split into ten screens so they can all see each other unwrapping their presents, as Gromit hides a freshly cooked turkey from the Chicken Run characters.
The campaign is designed to promote Google+ as a way to bring families together at Christmas, even if they can't be in the same place, and will run with the slogan "Get the family together, wherever they are".
